Quiet Luxury: Building a Material Palette That Ages Well

Why four honest materials, chosen carefully, will always outperform a dozen fashionable ones.
Start with four
A palette of one wood, one stone, one plaster and one metal is enough for an entire home. Constraint is what makes a space read as considered rather than assembled.
Choose for patina
Oil-finished oak, unlacquered copper and lime plaster all improve with touch. Materials that resist ageing usually fail visibly instead.
Test at full scale
Sample chips lie. A 600mm square mock-up under the room's actual light tells you the truth in ten minutes.
Let one material lead
Give roughly 60% of visible surface to a single material, 30% to a supporting one, and reserve the last 10% for accent. The ratio does most of the work.
