The Four Layers of Light Every Room Needs

Ambient, task, accent and decorative — and why most homes only ever install one of them.

Ambient is a floor, not a ceiling

A single central fixture flattens a room. Wash the walls instead and let reflected light fill the volume.

Task light belongs to the hand

Under-counter, bedside and desk light should sit below eye level so the source never enters the field of view.

Accent creates depth

Three to five pooled highlights give a room its sense of distance after dark.

Control matters more than fixtures

Dimming and warm-dim tuning improve a room more than doubling the lighting budget ever will.
